I often get asked by expectant mothers what they should pack in their hospital bag to bring with them for the birth and to make their stay more comfortable. I’ve divided this list into things that mom, birthing partner and baby may need. Allow it to serve as template of inspiration for you as you start packing your bag and getting closer to the big day! Happily discuss this list with your doula if you have any questions.

For Mom During Labor:

  • Chapstick
  • Your favorite water bottle with a straw: this makes it easier for your partner or doula to help bring you water throughout labor
  • Hair ties
  • Robe, or the top you’d like to labor in: some people like to labor in their own attire instead of hospital robes.
  • Atmosphere: Some mom’s love to bring their essential oils and essential oil diffusers, bluetooth speaker to play music, some variety of lighting such as Christmas lights or fairy lights

For Mom After Labor:

  • Flip flops for the shower
  • Socks
  • Cozy slippers or shoes to wear around the hospital
  • Comfortable clothes
  • Nursing shirt
  • Warm sweater
  • Comfortable Pajamas
  • Reusable breast pads
  • Postpartum underwear: the hospital will provide this but some people prefer to bring their own
  • Extra long phone charger
  • Toiletry bag: Hair brush, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, face wash, body wash, moisturizer, shampoo, conditioner

For Partner:

  • Snacks to eat throughout labor and after labor
  • 2-3 T-shirts
  • Comfortable pants
  • Socks

For Baby:

  • Car seat
  • Nursing pillow for breastfeeding
  • Swaddle
  • Hat
  • Going home outfit

Congratulations! You’re another step closer in preparing to welcome your little one.
