Pregnancy is an amazing time for mom! There are feelings of love, excitement and anxiety all of which are normal to the hormonal pregnant women. However, according to Cochrane, for about 12% of women these natural fears and anxieties may result in overwhelming feelings of sadness, loss and fatigue. Women suffering from antenatal depression are more likely to suffer from postpartum depression as well.

The good news is that there are many natural options to help with antenatal depression. You are not alone and there are many ways, more than just low dose antidepressants, to help you and your baby.

These Treatments Include:

Acupuncture: This utilizes small needles inserted just under the skin to help the body by stimulating different nerve impulses.

Maternal Massage: Many therapists work with pregnant women so they can lay on their side, propped up by pillows, or have a table to fit that gorgeous belly! This can even be effective if your partner gives you short nightly massages.

Bright-light therapy: This is the use of artificial light to alleviate depression. This may also help mom-to-be with her ever allusive sleep patterns!

Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Omega-3 fatty acids are not just great for depression but the DHA is great for baby development. Not that into fish? No Problem! Supplements are readily available for purchase or you may choose to eat walnuts, wild rice, eggs, or canola oil (non-GMO) if fish is not your favorite dish or you have a worry about mercury contents.

There are so many resources for antenatal depression and at Care for Mom we are dedicated to helping moms be the best and healthiest they can be- before, during and after birth! Pregnancy has wonderful and challenging ups and downs and we promise to be here through all those times. Please feel free to contact us here. We would love to help you and your baby!
