Many people don’t even know what a doula is. For those who do, they typically think of how a doula helps with labor. But there is much more to what a doula can offer, and a postpartum doula’s services is an excellent example of that.

What Is a Postpartum Doula?

postpartum doula assists the mother, and by extension the rest of the family, after a baby has been born. She has evidence-based knowledge about things like basic newborn care, baby feeding, mother-baby bonding, and more that she can share with the new family to help them adjust to being new parents.

If Mom had a C-section or other difficulties related to the birth that affect her recovery, she may help out by doing light housekeeping, running errands, making light meals, taking care of older siblings, and basic newborn care like changing diapers and bathing. This allows Mom to spend more time focusing on recovery rather than risking injury or delayed recovery by doing too much.

A postpartum doula can share educational information and material that helps the family adjust to their new roles, making first-time parents feel more confident about their parenting, and help with tending to the unique needs that a new mom has.

Why Would I Use One?

There are several reasons for retaining the services of a postpartum doula. A single mother with no support system may choose to use one so you can get some rest and adjust to being a parent on your own, or to help out with older children. A first time mother may want the help learning how to care for your new baby, including breastfeeding assistance.

If there were factors during labor and delivery that will make recovery more difficult or last longer, you may want to hire a postpartum doula to handle basic tasks around the house so you can spend your time recovering and bonding with your new baby.

Emotional recovery is just as critical as physical recovery, so if you’re feeling overwhelmed, confused, or emotionally volatile, the doula can help you with that, too. She can provide a listening ear, assure you that what you’re feeling is natural, and even encourage you to seek additional help if necessary.

Ultimately, you don’t need a specific reason. If you feel that a postpartum doula’s services would make the transition easier, that’s reason enough.
